What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that contours the body through the elimination of fat accumulations in the body that cannot be reduced through diet and exercise. It is traditionally performed on the thighs, waist, hips, abdomen, lower back, arms, chin and neck.
The ideal candidate for liposuction has a minimal accumulation of fat and good skin tone and with no excessive looseness in the areas to be treated.
Liposuction does not treat obesity. Patients get the best results when performed in addition to a weight loss program already in place based on changing eating habits and exercise routine to strengthen and improve fitness.
Liposuction Preoperative Consultation

- It is important to note that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and as mentioned before, must be accompanied by good eating habits, exercise routine and change in posture.

- Liposuction is considered a major surgery, which should be performed by a surgeon who has years of training and experience with modern surgical techniques in an appropriate surgical environment.
- The plastic surgeon should be informed about the use of any medications, health conditions and diseases that may influence the procedure.
- Avoid alcohol and cigarettes 2 weeks before surgery.
- Avoid the sun before and after surgery.
Liposuction Procedure
- Liposuction contours the body eliminating a variety of fatty deposits.
- The procedure is done through two small incisions made in inconspicuous places in the treatment area. Small tubes (Cannulas) are used after inserting a combination of saline and epinephrine into the procedure area.
- The most common areas for intervention are back, hip and abdomen giving patients a more contoured waist. Then, if the operating conditions allow, also we can also address the thighs and sometimes the armpits, arms and neck.
- Liposuction is performed under local, regional or general anesthesia. This decision is based on: the number of areas to be treated, the amount of fat to be removed, and the quality of the patient's skin.
- We then remove excess fluids, incisions are closed, bandages and compression garments are applied to control inflammation, help with circulation and recovery.
Liposuction Post-Op Care

- Postoperative rehabilitation should be guided by a physiotherapist who treats the inflammation and helps prevent seroma formation and fibrosis through massage, ultrasound, lymphatic drainage, acupressure and Endermologie.

- Patients need to start walking right after the procedure to encourage circulation.
- It is normal in the first 15 days post-surgery that clothes will feel slightly tight. Gradually you will see changes in your shape and size and actually start losing weight.
- You can gradually return to normal activities after the second week.
Liposuction FAQs
This procedure does not require an overnight hospital stay. The patient can go home the same day of surgery with a designated driver and someone to help them at home.
It is advisable to exercise after two weeks, and to avoid strenuous exercise until after the first month.
For best results, it is advisable that you maintain a healthy diet and exercise program prior to liposuction and continue after treatment. Ask your surgeon for a program that would be best for you.
If you maintain good eating habits and have a proper exercise routine, you will maintain your liposuction results. If a patient gains weight, your figure will increase and weight can be gained in areas where there was previously no problem.
