Breast - Breast Augmentation

What is Mammoplasty - Breast Augmentation?
There are situations in the development of women where the shape and size of breasts is not proportional to the shape of the female form and do not correspond to the aesthetic image of the contemporary woman.
This condition is called breast hypoplasia and people resort to external prosthetic clothing to enhance their figure. To make this increase permanent, medical science has developed breast implants that are inserted into a space beneath the mammary gland, which is called a breast augmentation.
This procedure uses implants to permanently enhance the breast and can be made of different materials.
All implants have a coating or silicone cover and are filled with either silicone gel or saline.
Breast Implant Consultation
- To perform a successful breast augmentation, it is crucial that the patient and surgeon discuss which type of implant should be used, the ideal size according to the proportions of the body and the way in which the implant will be inserted.
La mamoplastia o aumento de senos por medio de prótesis de silicona proporcina una silueta más armoniosa.

- It is important to tell your plastic surgeon about the type medication you are currently taking.
- If the patient is over 35 years old the surgeon may recommend a mammogram prior to the procedure.
Breast Implant Surgery
- We use a general anasthetic during breast enlargement surgery. In some cases, surgeons use a local anesthesia combined with a sedative.
- The implants is placed under the breasts, usually under the pectoral muscle. By placing them under the breast, it keeps the continuity between the breast tissue and nipple, giving a more natural look and it does not affect lactation in anyway.
- There are 3 types of incisions for breast implants:
- Through the Areola: An incision is placed at the bottom edge of the areola at the edge of contrasting skin tones. The scar will be barely visible.
- Through the Arm: Performed this way when using an implant patient serum or rejects the areolar method.
- Under the Breast: Usually only performed in patients with very small areolas, when the implants are too big or for breast augmentation revisions. This technique is also used when the implants are to be located at subglandular level; the natural form of the breast means that the scar is hardly visible.
- Breast augmentation can last between 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Post-Operative Care of Breast Augmentation
- Most of the discomfort after the procedure can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon.
- It is important to keep the bandage on to hold the implants in place. This bandage should remain in place for a week to prevent the rotation of the prosthesis.
- Sleep on your back for a month.
- Use the compression garments recommended by the surgeon to hold the breast implants in place.
- The stitches are removed between 7 and 14 days after surgery.
- The slight inflammation can last between 3 and 6 weeks after breast enlargement.
- No heavy lifting for the next three weeks.
- Do not drive during the next 3 weeks
- Massage is recommended by the doctor to avoid encapsulation of the implants.
What is the truth about silicone?
To date, there have been numerous clinical studies and have found no direct link between silicone implants and any disease. This does not rule out the possibility that the patient later develops a separate health issue independent of having an implant or not. Therefore, it is recommended that patients perform regular check-ups with their personal physician.
In a small percentage of cases, implants may present immediate or delayed encapsulation.
- Immediate Encapsulation: In very few cases this can occur and may happen because a seroma is left unturned or due to foreign body reactions, bacteria or powders.
- Late Encapsulation: Occurs after 8 or 10 years and is attributed to a possible leak of silicone gel through the original implant sac.
It is important to note that as with other medical and prosthetic interventions, including heart valves, artificial hips, dental prostheses, among, they are not created to last for a lifetime.
Breast implants should be assessed after 10 years, especially when you start the natural drooping of the breasts caused by age and gravity. After the assessment, if there are no clinical issues, and the patient is in good health, there is no need for the breast implants to be replaced.
Modern breast surgery use third-generation breast implants, that use cutting-edge technology coupled with appropriate techniques and minimal intervention, produces highly satisfactory results that will remain beautiful in the long term.
