Although BOTOX® is used for various reasons in medicine, it has become synonymous with cosmetic treatments that provide youth and beauty. It has become so popular that, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, it has been the number one non-invasive cosmetic procedure in the U.S. for the past few years.

BOTOX® is an injection that paralyzes certain facial muscles in order to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. When injected into certain areas of the face, such as forehead, between the eyes, around the eyes or “crow’s feet” or in areas where there are facial asymmetries, BOTOX® will prevent the muscles from creasing the skin, which normally happens with certain facial movements.

  • Botulinum toxin A or BOTOX® was used initially as a therapeutic treatment to relax the eye muscles in patients suffering from Strabismus. During this treatment, doctors found that, as a side effect, patients looked younger, so it soon became approved to be used as a cosmetic treatment

How does BOTOX® work?

  • BOTOX® is injected directly into the facial muscle responsible for the formation of the line or wrinkle, causing temporary relaxation and giving the face a more rested and youthful appearance.
  • After application, facial expression looks more relaxed but in no way resemble a mask. The results are completely natural.

  • BOTOX® should be applied by a facial plastic surgeon, since he knows the muscles and their movements and their nerve endings. He has the ability to identify where BOTOX® should be applied without the risk of affecting other muscles, nerves and movement.

BOTOX® Post Care and Warnings

  • The results of BOTOX® are seen 48-72 hours after application. They are not instantaneous as with injectible fillers, such as with Juvederm®.
  •  BOTOX® generally lasts 4 to 6 months.
  • After BOTOX® injections, patients should not massage the treatment area.
  • BOTOX®  injections must be performed by a plastic surgeon who also understands the structures and nerves of the face and know the right dose to be injected. A higher dose can cause muscle injury, spread the toxin to other muscles or the generate antibodies that cause the treatment to fail.
  • BOTOX® is NOT for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor if you have nerve or muscular problems.
  • BOTOX® is not recommended for patients taking antibiotics or muscle relaxant medication.

BOTOX® FAQ

Will I have the same results as BOTOX® if I use a facial cream?

There are no creams that contain botulinum toxin type A and no other type of cream can provide the same profound results as BOTOX®.

Will there be pain and bruising in the area where BOTOX® is injected?

There may be slight pain in the treatment area and, although it rarely occurs, small hematomas can occur.

Can BOTOX®  erase any wrinkle?

Botox inactivates the muscles that produce wrinkles. It does not act as filler material, and, therefore, cannot be used in wrinkles that appear while the face is resting.
